What Living with ADHD can Look Like:

What is your cleaning style? What does cleaning with kids looks like?… I’ll go first! 😬😅

To start, I should mention that Maddie and I have spent the last 2 years in a 750 square foot 2 bedroom apartment in Avondale, Jacksonville. This apartment checked the appropriate boxes at the time (January 2020) and we have since majorly outgrown the space (though I’m not sure we ever quite fit here).

I had to move at that time because my lease renewal where I was in Orange Park was going up by $200 a month in a 1 bedroom place and the location was far from ideal. That led me back to where we currently live since I had already lived here when I first moved to Jax in 2015.

Anyway… our tiny space is in a good neighborhood, and it gave us 2 bedrooms within budget, so I overlooked all the other issues. But now we are ready to move! 😅

Here are a few pics of what our living room and Maddie’s room can look like at any given time when I’m not cleaning at least 6 times a day:

So, now you have an idea on the level of disaster I deal with daily… this is not even including my least favorite part of this apartment: the kitchen 😒 which I just spent about 4 hours cleaning yesterday and it still isn’t great 😤🤦‍♀️ Notice in the pics the lack of space, lack of counters, no dishwasher, single basin sink that’s about 2 inches deep and I’m sure most people would understand why the kitchen here makes me nuts. I did buy this white plastic bin to soak dishes in after my dad suggested it because he spent a few years living in an apartment that wasn’t very functional as well. This does help to a degree, but it also requires space, which is scarce here. If I’m being honest, it sometimes takes me 3-5 days to get through dishes if I’ve cooked… which is insane! I know that sounds gross, and I guess to some degree it is, but I don’t leave them full of food and sitting in the sink, I always rinse them off and then put them in the white tub to soak in soapy bleach water, and if I can’t wash them the way I want, I change the bleach water out 🤷‍♀️ Not ideal, I know. But I have no dishwasher, no help and extremely limited space.

I typically spend at least 1 day a week doing massive cleaning to include: laundry, scrubbing the bathroom and kitchen, de-cluttering all the spaces like the living room and Maddie’s room, purging anything I think I can get away with throwing away/donating/passing down, changing the sheets, changing cat litter, cleaning all of Kevin’s food and water dishes and making sure I’m not growing any (unintentional) science experiments in the fridge 😬 All of this is in addition to small spurts of cleaning throughout the week, like dishes, bathroom cleaning, tidying up our spaces etc. Below are a few ‘after’ pics of some of my more successful cleaning sprees 😃

So that’s a glimpse into what my daily life looks like, so if you ever thought you were alone with struggling to keep your home clean and/or tidy- you’re not! Stay tuned for some tips and tricks and storage solutions for small spaces.
