Last minute life changes

The last week has been insane… and if you know me, you know that me saying that must mean something is up.

Of course the house isn’t done yet, and we still don’t have a closing date 🙄 and that makes all of what has happened so much harder.  Thankfully I have my brother nearby now, or this already bad situation would have been worse.

Last Saturday (Sept 17) I woke up like I normally would for work, and started to exercise (like I have for YEARS before, including when I moved into this apartment) and I started to hear some crazy noises from either the apartment next to me or below me… judging by where the noises came from, I couldn’t tell, but once I got ready for work and left the apartment, I could see no lights on next door to me, but lights were on downstairs 🤔

The complex we’ve been living in was bought out by a corporation during the first summer of COVID and it’s gone straight down ever since.  At first the changes were gradual, and I realize now that’s largely due to the rent moratorium from COVID.  But once that was lifted, the turnover started… and I’ve noticed some units barely stay occupied for a month or 2 before new people move in.  What started off as a great community with awesome neighbors has morphed into nothing short of a nightmare.

As I mentioned, the high turnover rate, changes with neighbors and some of the rules were definitely annoying, but then came the problems finding somewhere to park, being threatened by management with towing if we parked in someone else’s spot and the unacknowledged vandalism to our vehicles.  The windshield wiper ARM on the driver’s side of my car was ripped off, the back right side of my car was hit and I have found multiple notes on my car.  The windshield wiper arm thing turned out to be a HUGE problem… I had to order the part from another state and it was extremely difficult to drive until I got it put on (we are in the middle of hurricane season and the mornings are super humid so I need wipers to see out the windshield 🙄🤦‍♀️).

So back to the weird noises… I heard nothing from Sunday till Thursday, but Friday morning I hopped on the gazelle and within a couple of minutes I started to hear the extremely loud and inhuman noises again… but this time they weren’t only against the wall of the noisy neighbors.  I started to hear them against the opposite wall too, which also helped me narrow it down to the guy downstairs.  Then he came up banging on my door… I didn’t answer bc Maddie was home and he looked angry.  I almost called the cops, but I had an appointment and I had to drop off Maddie beforehand so I didn’t have the time.  I did call the non-emergent number and an officer came out to talk to me.  She suggested I get a camera, so I went and got one right after and my brother planned to spend the night with his dog to try to evaluate the situation.

My brother arrived around 3:30 and I needed to laundry, but I wanted to wait for him to come over before I went down to start.  Maddie had just went in her room and fell asleep for a bit, Joey was sitting on the couch and I was washing dishes in between doing the laundry.  Around 5-5:30 Maddie woke up and we heard the crazy noises from downstairs again… luckily Joey heard them this time and he agreed that it was one of the craziest things he’d ever heard.  He said maybe he was hanging a shelf 🤷‍♀️… Then our food was delivered at 6pm… I was in my room putting laundry away and I heard someone outside screaming “it’s too much” and then nothing else was coherent.  As I walked into the living room, my brother was backing up through the door with a shocked look on his face, and I still heard yelling from downstairs.  My brother said “we’re not staying here tonight, go pack some stuff”.  So I got some stuff together for the night.  While I was collecting some stuff, the noises from downstairs just escalated.  Every time we opened the door, he came out and stared at us.  My brother had to watch me put stuff in the car and drive away before he left.  The neighbor kept staring him down and followed him to his car when he left.  I called the non-emergent line again after I left to report the guy, but I have no idea what came of it.

The apartment complex has done nothing about any of it… not even acknowledging any part.  So I’m trying to move my stuff out ASAP… and then a hurricane the size of the state is about to hit 😫.

We are lucky enough that my brother just moved down here and we have somewhere safe to stay while the house is finished!  Maddie is loving having a dog and a cat at the moment 😍🥰
