Who is your favorite historical figure?
I’m not sure how many people would consider Michael Crichton a historical figure, but he is my all-time favorite author, and he is no longer alive, so he was who came to my mind first when I read this promt. If I could choose one person to go back in time to talk to, he is my first choice. When I was younger, I said, “If I could marry someone for their mind, it would be Michael Crichton… I would ask him to tell me stories all the time. ”
I did a little presentation on Michael Crichton a few years ago for a public speaking class, and doing research for that enlightened me to even more things that I love about him.
Did you know he went to Harvard medical school and he wrote under a pseudonym during those years to pay for his education? He didn’t want his teachers and fellow students to know what he was writing about because, at the time, he thought he would become a doctor. He completed medical school, but by the 3rd year, he knew he loved writing more than medicine.
There are so many interesting things about him… if you’ve never read any of his books, I highly recommend finding at least one! I have always loved science, and seeing how he was always able to blend real science in a fictional way for entertainment has always blown my mind. I came across “The Lost World” when I was 12, and I read it in 4 days flat… I continue to seek out his work to this day because it’s always THAT GOOD.
